Call To Arms Belle Vue Under Threat

21 YEAR CELEBRATION for Belle Vue in 2019 but will it be the last?

The iconic Belle Vue Greyhound Stadium, which opened in 1926 staging the first ever Greyhound race events in the UK is under immediate serious threat from developers for its very future.

Following that, a year later it hosted the birth of the world renowned Belle Vue Aces Speedway team.

With the rise and demise of the adjacent Zoological Gardens, redeveloped in the 1980’s the era also saw the destruction of the famous Hyde Road Stadium which hosted across several decades world class Speedway and Stock Car Racing . Belle Vue Greyhound Stadium is the sole surviving Legacy and Heritage of what created the legend Belle Vue with nothing as an alternative on offer within the area.

It continues as one the UK’s most popular Greyhound venues as well as hosting Speedway until recently and, very successfully, Stock Car Racing continuously for over 20 years.

In May of this year details of plans for redevelopment of the site emerged and in the last few days a formal application for close on 250 homes and apartments has been lodged with the city council for consideration.

Whilst the application was not unexpected , in the New Year a major campaign will be launched aimed to protect the legacy and history of the stadium which has very much become part of the fabric and way of life for many, many thousands who patronise events regularly.

In 2019 the stadium celebrates it’s 21st anniversary for Stock Car Racing since it opened in 1999 with visitors from not only across the Uk but internationally. The campaign will seek to object to the planning and try and ensure that the stadium remains as a landmark to be enjoyed for years to come - it is a worrying trend that too many community venues are being allowed to be redeveloped.

There is every confidence that Greyhound and Stock Car Racing will be unaffected in 2019 but if the application is successful continuance beyond that is very much in doubt.

We will in the New Year be releasing further information to encourage as many people as possible to engage and comment on the application and add their voices to our ‘Enough is enough Campaign'
In the interim we urge people to comment on the story in the Manchester Evening News online and local media and BBC in support of our stadium and sports. Please visit the planning portal and add your voice.

21 years is upon us to celebrate, let it not become a wake! Get behind Belle Vue

The planning application is due to be listed for mid March and closure on public response will close around 23rd January 2019
